Young athletes are finding benefits in Pilates
Training method helps dancers strengthen muscles through precise movements adjusted to fit them
Francesca Ghiorso is lying down, her tiny frame strapped into a contraption of pulleys, springs and stirrups that looks like it might be painful. But the 10-year-old is quite comfortable on this, a Pilates reformer machine, as she uses its resistance to help her perform wide, controlled circles with her leotard-clad legs. When she finishes those under the close supervision of Pilates instructor Laurie Wertich, Ghiorso moves on to squats, her feet carefully formed into the second position she knows so well from her study of ballet. more…
