FAQs

What sets Kinesis apart from our competition?
Kinesis is dedicated to safe and effective Pilates instruction for all ages and ability levels. All of the instructors at Kinesis have completed rigorous Pilates training and certification. Furthermore, Kinesis was founded by a physical therapist and as such, the principles of physical therapy and safe alignment guide the work that we do in the studio. We provide comprehensive, individualized instruction and progress our clients safely and effectively so that they feel and see the results of their Pilates practice.

Do I need to be flexible or in good shape to do Pilates?
No. Pilates will help you to develop flexibility, strength and stamina. Pilates can be individualized to meet the needs of all ability levels and body types. An effective Pilates instructor will be able to work with any client and modify the exercises to meet their needs.

Will Pilates help my sore back?
Many people have reported that Pilates has worked wonders for their back pain. Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles, which can often alleviate back pain. Depending on the cause and severity of the back pain, this will vary from person to person. Pilates focuses on proper alignment, which can restore balance to the muscles and bones and as a result, alleviate pain. Of course, it's imperative to consult with a doctor or a physical therapist prior to beginning any new exercise regimen. If you have a spine injury, it's important to understand the mechanics of that injury and to find a physical therapist or Pilates instructor who can work with you in a safe and beneficial way.

How often should I do Pilates?
For best results, we recommend at least two Pilates sessions per week. If possible, you may want to incorporate two private sessions on the equipment with one or two mat classes per week. However, even if you can only make time for one session each week, you will notice results. Joseph Pilates recommended a daily Pilates regimen, even if only for 10-15 minutes per day. As you begin to familiarize yourself with the method, you may find that you can incorporate some of the Pilates work into your home fitness regimen.

How do I get started?
We offer several options for the beginning Pilates student. The best way to start is with private instruction where you will learn proper form and technique prior to entering a group Mat Class. The Pilates Challenge is a 10-week program that includes 10 private sessions, 20 group classes, a postural evaluation, fitness assessment and comprehensive body analysis (before and after). In addition, we offer an Introductory Package. Please see our rates for more information on these options.

What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, stretchy clothes that allow you to bend and move. If possible, wear form-fitting clothing in order to make it easier for your instructor to identify postural and alignment issues and ensure proper form.

Should I eat before I come to Pilates?
It's best to practice Pilates on an empty stomach; however, if you find that you have blood sugar issues, try eating a small snack (such as a banana) 30-60 minutes prior to your session.
